Findings from researchers show that allergic asthma can make flu worse. Exposure to dust mites, pet dander and mold can lower immune response making flu symptoms worse for patients who experience bouts of allergic asthma that inflames the airways, causes wheezing and also lowers the body’s ability to fend off the flu virus.
Scientists say the study shows the importance of taking measures to control allergic asthma symptoms. “…the better your asthma is controlled, the more likely you are to have an appropriate response to a virus,” said Dr. Michelle Gill, lead author of the study.
“When individuals with asthma come in contact with an allergic trigger and a respiratory virus, the allergen may actually interfere with the immune response to the virus. This interruption in the antiviral response may contribute to exacerbations of asthma that are commonly associated with respiratory viral infections.”
Dr. Gill says when flu season strikes patients with allergic asthma can experience worse symptoms. The scientists exposed immune cells of individuals with asthma to the flu virus, finding that the cells of individuals with allergic asthma failed to produce a protein called interferon that is vital to immunity.
Indoor allergens can make flu worse for individuals with asthma. The findings have prompted researchers to continue their studies into the role of IgE, a molecule that is higher in patients with asthma. Finding ways to lower IgE to prevent allergic asthma flare-ups could also help patients fight flu and other viruses. Other ways to ensure a healthy immune response in preparation for flu season is to reduce exposure to indoor allergens to minimize repeated bouts of allergic asthma that can make flu symptoms worse.
