Reasons for Belly Button Discharge
Belly button discharge is due Candida or some other fungi. The belly button is actually a breeding place for fungi, especially if it is warm and moist due to sweat or grime. If you have belly button fungal infection, it will appear red and the redness can move to the surrounding skin area as well. Needless to say that it can be itchy as well.
Belly button infection can also be because of bacteria affecting the belly button, taking advantage of the existing fungi damage. This results in yellowish type of discharge .
Redness of the belly button is not really an infection, it can be due psoriasis, a skin disorder. You will find scaliness due to psoriasis in areas like legs and arms, but in belly button, a moist area, it is normally shiny and reddish.
How to solve the problem of belly button discharge
• Do not scratch the area, resist the urge.
• Wash the belly button area gently using water to which you have added sufficient salt to give it a saline taste (about a tablespoonful in a bowl, or two handfuls in the bath). If you are taking a shower, use the shower head to rinse it well. Cautiously dab it dry.
• Don’t put any antiseptics, or add antiseptic to your bath water. This could aggravate the skin condition. Use antiseptics and antibiotics only with the permission of the doctor. If the condition does not clear after cleaning the belly button, you may have to check with a doctor.
