Individuals suffering from stress know that focusing on things and keeping the thoughts straight can be difficult. The brain starts working on overdrive and the mind is also too much focused on trying to get out of stress (which usually stresses the person more). Many physicians state that taking a deep breath can really help in stressful situations.
Following are breathing techniques and exercises which can be tried for stress relief:
- Hyperventilating in a stressful situation isn’t going to help the body or the mind. However, if any individual feels like he/she is going into such a situation, then it is best to take deep cleansing breaths. One can lie down on the bed (or floor with a blanket and pillow) and take calming breaths for stress relief. The individual shouldn’t let the mind race because this can enhance the stress levels.

- The healthier way of breathing is to breathe through the nose and exhale through the mouth. This air is cleaner and pure.
- Many practitioners have stated that it helps a lot and get stress relief when they think of something peaceful while practicing the breathing techniques. These envisions could be anything from a happy memory, face of loved one or even of a child. These thoughts are more reassuring and can take one’s mind of the problem.
- One of the most powerful stress relieving breathing practices is to focus on the breath without paying attention to any of the negative thoughts. It works wonders to quite the thoughts. When the mind is focusing on the breath, it has something to center on other than the problem. Also, focusing on any other thought might bring back the mind to the stress therefore it is best to ignore the thoughts. If the breath seems too fast, then it should be slowed down by taking sweeping long breaths. Doing this practice in a quieter place also helps a lot.
- Calmer thoughts and feelings can be achieved by regularly going to a quite place and doing the breathing techniques. This becomes the place to unwind after a stressful day or week.
