Causes and reasons of Hyperthyroidism

Thyroid gland is located in neck and its main function is to produce proper quantity of two hormones (T3, T4). These hormones play a major part in the proper functioning of various body parts and regulate a number of aspects of the body’s metabolism. These hormones also control the body weight, how much the metabolism gives and the number of calories burnt. Thyroid hormones also regulate the heart beat count.

Infact, it is seen many times that the faster beating of heart is caused due to thyroid influence. Hyperthyroidism is a thyroid problem in which the gland overworks and starts secreting increasing quantity of thyroid hormones. There are number of reasons which can result in hyperthyroidism; few of them are mentioned below:

In most cases, grave’s disease is the one which causes hyperthyroidism. This disease causes the gland to enlarge which results in over secretion of thyroid hormones. This disease also comes under the category of autoimmune problems in which the immune system of an individual starts fighting against the thyroid gland. This causes the hormones to secrete in abnormally large quantity.

This problem can also occur due to malfunctioning of a single nodule (tissue mass or lump in the gland which cause the problem) of the gland in comparison to entire gland’s hyperactivity. These lumps can be of a cancerous nature and hyperactivity of thyroid hormone in this condition is called as Toxic Nodular Goiter.

Hyperthyroidism can also be due to the single nodule inside the thyroid gland, instead of the hyperactivity of the entire thyroid gland. Nodules are the lumps or masses of tissues in the glands causing the situation. These lumps may be cancerous in nature sometimes, and the high secretion of thyroid hormones at that condition is known as “Toxic Nodular Goiter”.

Hyperthyroidism can also occur due to thyroiditis – inflammation of thyroid which is caused due to bacterial or viral infection. This infection can occur for several weeks and then appear as a very painful inflammation.
