Hypotrichosis Definition

Normally by birth every living being has some specific amount of hair over his head and body but in few cases children are born with less than normal hair and that defect is called hypotrichosis but in many cases it is observed that usually men lose their hair at the age of 25. Dermatologists use this term to describe the condition of no hair growth.

Congenital Hypotrichosis

Congenital hypotrichosis is that hypotrichosis which is present at the time of birth. It is a very rare inherited disorder associated with the reduction of hair from birth and the development of countless milia that gradually disappears by adolescence. These milia may occur on face, armpits, chest and genital area.

Hypotrichosis Causes

Usually it is observed that hypotrichosis is caused by genetic disorder of embryonic development. There are many kinds of genetic hypotrichosis displaying other physical and mental abnormalities too like Ofuji syndrome, Rime hypotrichosis, cartilage-hair hypoplasia, Graham-Little syndrome, Marie Unna hypotrichosis and metaphyseal chondrodysplasia.

There are certain infectious reasons of hypotrichosis.

Ringworm

It is an infectious skin condition and can emerge anywhere on the body but it can be a cause of hair loss if developed on scalp.

Folliculitis

This term is associated with focal inflammation of hair follicles that look like little rings of acne. In sever folliculitis there are clear chances of the destruction of hair fiber resulting into bald patches.

Piedra

It is a condition in which hard nodules are formed on hair fiber because of fungal infection.

Demodex folliculorum

People believe that demodex may lead to hair loss. They are worm like creatures that live on skin and hair follicles.

Seborrheic dermatitis

Although seborrheic dermatities is not an infectious disease but it can entail infection. This is a skin disease but can cause hair loss if located on scalp.

There are certain Hair Shaft Defects that cause hypotrichosis and they are;

Loose anagen syndrome

This type of syndrome grows hair that is naturally lose from roots and can be easily pulled out. Mostly it is found in young children and females. Their scalp hair is thin and hair never seems to grow. They do not even go for a hair cut as it is not required.

Traction alopecia and trichotillomania

While combing or binding hair tightly often people pull their hair out of their scalp and if it is left unnoticed then permanently hair pulling will lead towards baldness.

Over processing, bubble hair and cuticle stripping

Over processing means try to change the texture and look of hair by applying certain chemicals and machines. This process if used for a long time, can affect hair permanently.

Monilethrix

Monilethrix (an autosomal dominant disorder) makes a string of beads of hair fiber that weakens it and causes hair loss.

Trichorrhexis nodosa

Trichorrhexis nodosa is one of the most common hair shaft defects and associated with focal defect in hair fiber because of the absence of cuticle. It could be congenital or acquired.

There re certain drugs that cause hypotrichosis but sometimes the intake of such medicines is inevitable. Those disorders whose medication can cause hypotrichosis are;

  • Acne
  • Cholesterol
  • Depression
  • Fungus
  • Glaucoma
  • Heart
  • Cancer
  • Hormonal Conditions
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Thyroid Disorders

There is no known reason of congenital hypotrichosis but some people believe that it is because of cousin marriages.

Hypotrichosis treatment

  • As far as congenital hypotrichosis’s treatment is concerned that hair loss is permanent, only in few cases surgery can be handy in removing that scars which result into hypotrichosis.
  • Eyelashes hypotrichosis is treated with medicines for example Latisse.
  • General hypotrichosis that emerges with the passage of time, as far as baldness is concerned, is averted through hair transplantation.
  • There are certain medicines that claim the treatment of hypotrichosis but all in vain.
  • That hypotrichosis which appears because of the usage of certain medicines are automatically cured by quitting them.
  • Infectious hypotrichosis can be treated with anti bionics.
