People who are into an insecure relationship are at higher risk for a heart disease along with other health problems, says a latest study in Canada. An analysis of the data available at US National Comorbidity Survey Replication reveals that the individuals who feel insecure in relationship or avoid being close to others seems to be higher risk of developing various chronic diseases.
The Canadian team studied the survey data that involved 5645 adults, between 18 and 60, and found that there existed a link between ‘avoiding attachment’ and chronic pains like headaches. People who were unable to be close to others or had others depending on them in their relationship had further risks.
A fear of getting rejected in relationships, feeling needy and reluctance of others to get close are some conditions associated with cardiovascular problems like heart attack, stroke and hypertension. Anxious attachment was also found to be associated to a greater risk of ulcers and chronic pain.
Most of the previous health researches on attachments were focused mainly on pain conditions. So at the initial stages of the research, the team was surprised when the findings were mainly involved with conditions associated to the cardiovascular system.
Lachlan A. McWilliams, the lead author of the study revealed in an American Psychological Association new release that the findings indicate that insecure relationship may be a risk factor for many health problems, especially cardiovascular diseases. He expressed his views that a longitudinal research on this subject is required so as to determine if insecure relationships can predict the development of heart diseases. He was also of the opinion that these findings are raising questions about the possibility of interventions targeted at improving attachment security may have positive health outcomes.
