Certain skin conditions cause itching hands and itching arms which have their own causes and treatment. Mostly, the exact cause of itching hands and arms in such conditions is not known, nor is there a guarantee that it can be completely cured by prescribed medications.
Keratosis Pilaris: or chicken skin is a skin problem which involves small bumps and appears on the upper arms. Dead skin cells, instead of falling off accumulate around hair follicles and plug them causing skin bumps. One of the most common skin itching causes, this condition is also hereditary which gradually ceases to be with age.
Treatment for Keratosis Pilaris: Continuous treatment with moisturizing creams with salicylic acid or lactic acid, rubbing of pumice stone, exfoliants like retinoid, laser assisted hair removal, and acne removal with a needle, chemical peel, laser, etc. can bring results.
Brachioradial Pruritis: it was earlier famous as Itchy Upper Arm problem. It is an intense skin itch on the arm’s outer parts and back. It’s caused by the damaged nerves in the sun exposed skin usually appearing with age but never found in individuals below 18. Itching hands is a common problem, however.
Treatment for Brachioradial Pruritis: Tricyclic antidepressants by mouth may help you sleep since the itch is prominent at night. Ice cubes or wet clothes placed over the affected area, topical capsaicin, chiropractor, and acupuncture may provide relief. However, covering the hands and avoiding the sun during the noon is advised. Itching hands treatment is available and can be done, easily.
Pompholyx: is a common skin inflammation with blisters. It’s often connected with sweaty palms. Itching hands in this condition also are prominent.
Treatment for Pompholyx: depends on the type of inflammation and skin. Applying Aluminum acetate or 1% vinegar for 15 minute a day four times a day, moisturizing crèmes, appropriate antibiotics, and PUVA therapy, with ultraviolet light helps to a certain extent.
Hand Dermatitis: is caused by exposure to certain types of substances which cause allergy through rubber accelerators in gloves, PPD in hair dyes, metal closures on cloth, nickel in jewelry and chromates in shoe leather, fragrance, lanolin in cosmetics and ointments or formaldehyde.
Treatment for Hand Dermatitis: Antihistamines by mouth and in case of sever in inflammation, corticosteroids may help. To prevent such itchy hands, avoid wet work and irritant substances.
Palmoplantar Keratoderma: The skin thickens with marked visibility on the palms. This skin condition may be inherited or related to psoriasis, eczema, medications, infections, cancer, toxicants and/or any other internal disease or circulation disorder.
Treatment for Palmoplantar Keratoderma : moisturizing crèmes and ointments with salicylic acid, and vitamin D help the thinning of the skin.
Chilblains: is caused by extreme cold conditions. The person experiences itch, pain, reddish/purplish swelling of the fingers and can last for several days.
Treatment for Chilblains: Corticosteroid ointment reduces swelling, Heparin ointment helps in improving blood circulation, and mild painkillers (such as paracetamol or aspirin) reduce pain.
