Studies carried out in Aberdeen and Auckland Universities show that taking calcium pills increases the risk of heart attack. This association was found after analyzing 11 studies that covered about 12,000 individuals who take calcium supplements of 500 mg or more.
The calcium supplements are usually recommended to older women as part osteoporosis treatment. However, most researchers are of the opinion that these calcium pills increase the levels of serum calcium in blood. The presence of abundant serum calcium hardens the arteries. The authors of the published study conclude that the levels of serum calcium in blood are linked to the increase in number of cases of heart attack due to [...]

by dr.Mike on 30. Jul, 2010 in Health News

The already obese and pregnant women should avoid going on a weight-reduction diet as this may cause complications for the baby. They are supposed to be on a healthy [...]

by dr.rajesh moganti on 28. Jul, 2010 in Health News
A study that came out in the journal Neurology on Monday suggests that only a few epilepsy drugs are connected to rise in suicidal tendency, even though all the medications display a warning about the hazard.
The study involved 44,300 UK patients using epilepsy medications from 1990 to 2005. But an increase in suicidal tendency was noticed only in a few patients who use a few newer drugs that were previously associated with risk of depression. Some of the newer drugs are topiramate (Topamax), levetiracetam (Keppra), tiagabine (Gabitril) and vigabatrin (Sabril).
In 2008, the Food and Drug Administration had ordered that all the epilepsy drugs should display a warning about the risk [...]
