Mental Health Impact on an Obese Child

Obesity in children is a common problem these days as a lot of children are seen not exercising and always lazing around in their house and eating anything they can get their hands on. The parents of an obese child might not consider it a major problem, but it can result in a number of cardiovascular and heart problems. However, the thought of psychological effects of obesity on child were not heard of before.

But, the issue of obesity is receiving a lot of attention these days and one might wonder as to what happens to the emotional and mental health of a child. Even the parents feel it’s very difficult for them to know their child’s feelings and thoughts as they couldn’t be with their child all day long.

During school, bullying and teasing happens occasionally with them. Children, although being playful and innocent can also act wickedly with other peers. Moreover, it is a known fact that children can easily reflect their thoughts/feelings with their peers.

Kids who are teased about their body can have a hampered self-image and low self esteem. Because of these teases, there are fewer chances that other children would associate themselves with that child. This can result in depression and most children start using food to comfort their feelings. If not stopped, then it can lead to repercussions which can also hamper their adult life.

The impact of childhood obesity on the mental health of an individual can also be seen in his/her adulthood as a large number of kids remain obese when they become adults. So, it is important for parents to notice the mental health of their obese child, and take measures to avoid the problem being carried on to their adulthood.

Adult obesity can cause social anxiety as humans wish to become friends with other people, which also depicts that they have been accepted in the social circle. Therapists say that social anxieties are just defense methods which help the obese in preserving his/her self esteem.
