In the last few decades, a lot of attention and light has been shed on modern medications, diets, fitness, exercise and health. However, the society nowadays is still witnessing a radical increase in almost all of the chronic illnesses. These include conditions such as chronic fatigue, chronic pain, infertility, constipation, acid reflux, decrease in the sex drive, autoimmune problems, dementia, depression, obesity, heart and cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer etc.
But the major point to stress is that many doctors and scientists have stated the fact that almost 99 percent of the chronic illnesses are preventable. It means that they aren’t caused due to any genetic reasons and if even they occur, they require a trigger which causes the final effect. One can take the example of a gun – it can be loaded with a number of bullets, but someone still has to pull the trigger to fire the gun.
Similarly in the case of illness, the trigger becomes the environment and lifestyle choices of an individual. The studies on chronic disorders have found out that that there are some direct relationships between the illnesses and the environmental factors. These can be broadly classified with the following reasons –
- Decrease in body’s immunity.
- Decrease in the sex hormone binding globulin.
- Chronic inflammation.
- Resistance of insulin.
- Increase in the stress hormones.
Although, several people state that the raw material might have been already there and it could have had grown over time. Therefore, instead of accepting their individual decisions, they can blame their genetic makeup. But, in medical terms, the material has to be ‘cooked’ to become the end product.
The ‘cooking’ is done by the lifestyle choices. It doesn’t matter if the factors are related to mindset, movement or nutrition – sufficient and healthy provide a healthy body; whereas deficient and toxic choices would cause the body to adapt to those situations and result in being the breeding ground for chronic illness. A philosopher once said, lifestyle choices can be considered as the rocks we carry in our hands when we cross the pond (of life). Choosing heavy rocks can result in ‘drowning’.
