The United States Food and Drug Administration has been sued in the U.S. District Court in Manhattan by a nonprofit environmental group which claims that FDA failed to take sufficient measures to control the use of toxic chemicals in personal care products, especially antimicrobial soaps. The accusations by National Resources Defense Council state that triclocarbon and triclosan, two widely used ingredients in personal care products, are grave sexual health hazards.
Triclocarbon and triclosan not only harm the reproductive organs but also affect the production of sex and thyroid hormones. The sperm quality too suffers due to excessive use of products with triclocarbon and triclosan as ingredients. The allegations also stated that bio-monitoring of Americans over 6 years age has revealed shocking results with triclosan residues found in 75% of those monitored.
The plaintiffs alleged that the agency violated federal laws by delaying the regulation over the use of such products. FDA had in fact proposed regulation of similar products about 30 years back but no action was taken. Due to this delay in action by the agency, consumers were exposed to triclocarbon and triclosan for all these years by means of various over-the-counter products like the antimicrobial soaps that keep multiplying in the market.
The Food and Drug Administration has said that it had reviewed the safety and harms of triclosan in the month of April and finding no hazards in its use, did not consider banning or restricting its use in personal care products. The agency also said that it was working on publishing new rules for regulating the use of triclocarbon in personal care products but refused to divulge any deadline. It also complained of the unavailability of enough data on potential health effects resulting due to exposure to these toxins.
