Conjunctiva is the tissue which runs over the eyeball and lines the eyelids and if this tissue inflames then it is known as conjunctivitis. This problem causes burning of eyelid, pus formation and reddening of eyelids. An inflamed eye generally becomes sensitive to light and tears flood continuously.
Optometrists (eye doctors) treat this problem according to the germ which caused the inflammation and its severity. A common form of conjunctivitis is pinkeye. When this germ enters the eye; it starts to redden, the lids become puffy/swollen and the eyes get glued in the morning. It usually spreads by soiled hands or by using common towel.
There are ways in which a patient can treat conjunctivitis at home. Some of these remedies are mentioned in the following lines:
- Some raw juice should be made from celery, carrot and spinach. This juice is very beneficial in boosting the immune system and can easily and quickly treat the problem of eye infection.
- Some gooseberry juice mixture should be made with some honey. This juice can be drunk twice daily for seven days to relieve the swelling and pain of the infection. Another dietary change involves including some Vitamin B2 and A supplements. These vitamins could be easily found in foods like yogurt, whole milk, green vegetables, papaya and mangoes.
- A decoction can be made from coriander which could be used as eye wash. It kills the bacteria present in the eyes completely and can help in alleviating the pain. If an individual has conjunctivitis, then he/she should eat more fruits and vegetables. However, consumption of bananas should be stopped for some time. In severe cases, the patient can drink 3-4 glasses of fresh vegetable/fruit juice in a single day. Another dietary change involves adding nuts and bread (whole meal) in the meal of the patient.
The above mentioned remedies are very beneficial in curing eye infection. However, if the case worsens, then the patient should go to an optometrist as the doctor would prescribe stronger medications or eye drops.
