Diagnosis of all types of skin cancer is performed with biopsy by taking a piece of tissue (under local anesthesia) and transferred to the laboratory
for microscopic examination. If the tumor has spread then the nearby lymph nodes are checked. In some cases other type of investigations are carried out by the doctors depending on the severity of the condition.
A plan for cancer treatment is carried out according to the tumor size, distribution, and type of cancer, patient’s age and general conditions for the treatment of skin cancer and for removal of the tumor, while leaving as little as possible the traces of scars.
Sometimes before the surgery, it makes sense to consult with several doctors, as well as plastic surgeons. Using radiotherapy and chemotherapy are the best treatment for skin cancers. Kinds of operations are:
- Removing tumor using a special surgical instrument resembling a sharp spoon attached to a lower current, which helps stop the bleeding during surgery.
- Mohs method: In this type of surgical treatment of skin cancer – the aim is to remove the tumor with minimum damage to surrounding healthy tissue. This method is used in remote parts of the body.
- Cryosurgery: Remove tumors with freezing method. This method is usually used when the tumor has not yet developed into malignancy. Freezing is done with liquid hydrogen in the process of which cancer cells are destroyed.
- Removing of tumor by laser therapy. This form of cancer treatment is used for superficial tumors. In some cases, after surgery to remove a tumor plastic surgery for skin grafts is required.
- Radiotherapy-destruction of cancer cells with minimal harm to surrounding healthy tissues. Sometimes irradiation is in addition to operation. Irradiation almost has no side effects.
