
Teriparatide (Forteo) is a recombinant form of parathyroid hormone, used for treating most forms of osteoporosis It is manufactured and marketed by Eli Lilly and Company. Teriparatide is administered by injection once a day in the thigh or abdomen. The recommended dose is 20 μg per day.
The once daily injection of teriparatide has an effect of new bone formation that leads to increased bone mineral density. Teriparatide is the first and the only FDA approved drug for Osteoporosis treatment, that leads to new bone formation. Teriparatide was approved for the treatment of osteoporosis in men and post menopausal women who are at high risk of getting a fracture.
Side Effects of Teriparatide
The biggest side effect of teriparatide is an increased risk of osteosarcoma, visible in rat studies. . Because of this risk, it is characteristically used as second line therapy and even then the administration does not exceed two years.
