Erythromycin Ointment is a topical antibiotic that is known to treat acne effectively. Basically, Erythromycin is a macrolide, which slows down the growth of the bacteria which causes acne on the skin. Since it is a prescription medication, you should check with your doctor before applying it to your skin. Do not give it to any other person who has acne, without consulting the doctor. How to use Erythromycin Ointment:
- Wash the affected acne area with soap and water. Rinse well, dab the area dry and then apply Erythromycin Ointment. Apply the ointment gently with your fingertips, covering the area with a thin film of the medicine.
- Ideally use the medication on the same time daily.
- In case you miss a dose, take it when you remember. However if it is the time of the next dose, skip the one that you have missed.
When should I stop taking Erythromycin Ointment?
Do not stop it on your own accord. Your doctor should tell you when you have to stop using Erythromycin. You may even take it for a few days after you feel better.
Warning about Erythromycin Ointment
Use the acne treatment topical medication for external use only. Do not bring it in contact with nose, eyes and mouth. If the ointment goes in your eyes, rinse it quickly with cool, running tap water.
In case, you get stomach pain or diarrhea after taking Erythromycin, check with your doctor.

Erythromycin Precautions
Before taking Erythromycin, you should let the doctor know about the following things,
- If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or lactating
- If you are taking an existing prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal medicine, or nutritional supplement
- If you have allergies to certain topical medicines, food, or other substances
- If you have liver disease or a blood disorder known as porphyria
Erythromycin Ointment overdose
In case of Erythromycin overdose, you should check with your local poison control center or contact emergency immediately. It can cause complications if swallowed.
