Gastrointestinal condition like constipation is common among millions of people. When a normal bowel movement does not take place and
instead the release of the stool takes longer than required, uneasiness is experienced in the body. It is an uncomfortable and embarrassing experience to go through. This condition mostly occurs due to the lack of fiber in the body. There are definitely certain measures that, if taken care of, can absolutely avoid constipate.
- Fiber increases the water content in the intestine and thus fastens the bowel movement. Food rich in dietary fiber like whole meal bread, whole wheat pasta, corn, whole rice, and flakes, must be included in the diet. Fruits, vegetables, nuts and pulses are also rich in fiber.
- Food that contains lactic acid is also beneficial for digestion; for example, yoghurt, and sauerkraut. At least 2 liters of water must be taken for a better intestinal activity. A lot of liquid intake is recommended. Include fruit juices in breakfast routine. They make the stool softer. Prunes, prune juice, and bran too are very good for the digestive system.
- Avoid food that contains fats and oils, esp. deep fried food. Sweets, chocolates and cakes have no amount of fiber in them. Avoid having too much of meat, fish and eggs during the week. Even alcohol causes constipation. Limit the amount of alcohol.
- Regular exercise is a must, esp. for the lower abdominal and pelvic muscles. It increases intestinal activity. Enough sleep and avoiding stress too is helpful for a normal movement. Strong laxatives must be avoided as far as possible. Certain medicines are also constipating; medicines which contain iron and calcium. Caffeine intake must also be cut down as it dehydrates the body.
Thus, we can say that a limited amount of every food product and also a rich fiber diet are very helpful in curbing constipation.
