Dry lips can be caused by the loss of water, and the lack of natural oils in the body. They are also caused by constant licking, cold weather, and dry lipswind. Its symptoms are splitting of the lips, bleeding, flaks, and redness. Lips need to be taken care of as the skin of the lips is very delicate and sensitive.

Vitamin B, iron or essential fatty acids are essential components that our body needs to keep the skin supple. If the body lacks in either of the three its direct effect is seen on the lips. The skin needs vitamin A and other nutrients to keep it healthy. It can be easily found in green leafy vegetables like spinach, carrots, tomatoes, etc. Lips are tender therefore it can be easily damaged by minute disturbances in internal health.

Keep your body hydrated. Loss of water in the body also causes the lips to dry. A certain level of water is required to keep the lips hydrated and fresh.

To treat the chapped lips some of the home remedies can be tried. A slice of cucumber and Aloe Vera gel rubbed on your lips, or applying juice from the Neem leaves are a few good home remedies for chapped lips. Butter or ghee also does a good job in keeping the lips hydrated and soft. Even a good medicated lip cream for that matter is extremely useful.

Use a lipstick that has a cream base in it; otherwise bad quality lipsticks are often the reason for dried lips. In addition to that, avoid licking your lips too much. People are often found biting and peeling their lips removes the protective layer of the lips which causes further dryness.

Chapped lips are damaged lips which have cracks and often bleed. They can be easily infected by outside influences. Also, sour edibles like lemon juice, etc. can cause pus in these cracks. The cracks can be protected by applying ointments that are glycerin based.
